Chris Cuomo, a former CNN anchor, is coming back to primetime television.
For NewsNation, the cable news channel owned by major regional TV company Nexstar, Cuomo will headline a primetime program. During an interview with Dan Abrams, host of NewsNation at 9 PM on Tuesday night, the information was made public on the channel.
Cuomo’s program will premiere in the autumn.
Cuomo said to Abrams, “I want to find a way to help people, I’m coming to newsNation, and I want to establish something unique here. I’ve come to the conclusion that I can’t return to what people refer to as “the big game,” and I believe we need alternative media that isn’t just out there to make money.
After fresh information concerning the extent Cuomo took to assist his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, in defending himself against sexual harassment claims, Cuomo was dismissed by CNN in December.
He started his return efforts earlier this month with a podcast dubbed The Chris Cuomo Project. In the first episode, which also featured an interview with actor Sean Penn, Cuomo declared that he will “never be a hater” of CNN for the first time since leaving the cable news network.
By promising “fact-based news” free of “bias,” NewsNation, run by Michael Corn, a former executive producer of ABC’s Good Morning America (Cuomo also worked for ABC News), has been attempting to compete in a crowded and fiercely politicized cable news market.
The channel had a redesign last year, and NewsNation was introduced as a programming block in 2020. It ran as a cable channel called WGN America before changing to cable news. When Nexstar acquired Tribune’s TV assets in 2019, it also acquired it.
Abrams, a former executive and broadcaster for MSNBC, is currently ABC News’ chief legal reporter and a member of the network’s primetime roster.
Nexstar executives claim that NewsNation is profitable despite having less than 100,000 viewers on average every episode so far this year.
