This particular passage transports us back to February 7, 1980, when The Sugarhill Gang, made up of the late Henry “Big Bank Hank” Jackson, Guy “Master Gee,” and Michael “Wonder Mike” Wright, all of Englewood, New Jersey, released their self-titled debut album, Sugarhill Gang, widely regarded as the first full-length Hip Hop album ever released.
The project was released by Sugar Hill Records, which was formed by Milton Malden and Joe and Sylvia Robinson as well as featured six records, including “Rapper’s Delight,” in its 39:17 running time. Although Fatback Band’s “King Tim III (Personality Jock),” released six months earlier, is actually credited for the first track to feature rapping, “Rapper’s Delight,” ranked No. 251 on Rolling Stone Magazine’s “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list, is generally regarded as the first song that popularized Hip Hop and was also the first to become a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
