Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is reportedly being paid a lot of money for one of his forthcoming gigs.

The former wrestler has made a career out of big action movies with large salaries, but his latest holiday film is poised to surpass the record for highest-paid actor of all time.

The Rock appears in Prime Video’s Red One, a Christmas action comedy starring Marvel’s ex-Captain America Chris Evans, Spider-Man’s JK Simmons, Charlie’s Angels’ Lucy Liu, Big Mouth’s Nick Kroll, and Jumanji OG’s Bonnie Hunt. Kristofer Hivju from Game of Thrones and Kiernan Shipka from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina also appear.

The film, directed by Jake Kasdan of the new Jumanji movie, has published a few first photographs of The Rock dressed in a red and black leather costume as Callum Draft, with Evans playing a character dubbed Jack O’Malley. Meanwhile, Simmons and Hunt play Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The premise is unknown, but it appears that viewers will be in for a high-octane holiday trip due to the script written by Fast & Furious’ Chris Morgan from a story by Hiram Garcia.

Johnson, on the other hand, not only takes the largest cut of any of his cast members, but also sets a new record for the actor earning the most upfront payment.

In the age of streaming platform-produced movies, upfront payment simply means that the performer is paid before the film is released to the public.

When the film is distributed in theaters (which is not always the case in the age of direct-to-streaming), performers receive a percentage of the income generated after the film breaks even in the form of backend points.

If a film isn’t solely released in theaters, it’s typical for the actor to try to negotiate a greater upfront pay. That brings us back to The Rock, who will receive a whopping $50 million for Red One.

He breaks the previous record for upfront payment, which was shared by Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America: Civil War and Will Smith in King Richard, both of whom received $40 million.

Even for The Rock, whose remuneration plan garnered him $22 million for Disney’s Jungle Cruise, $13 million more than his co-star Emily Blunt, this is a remarkable sum.

When the SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) strike was declared on July 13, Blunt was among the stars who walked out of the Oppenheimer premiere in London.

The group has 160,000 members from the film business, including numerous A-listers. Actors have joined the Writers Guild of America, which has been on strike for months after failing to reach a deal with studios over compensation, working conditions, and the implications of artificial intelligence technology.
