George Wendt, the protagonist of “Cheers,” has passed away. He was 76 years old.
The actor, who played Norm Peterson in the sitcom, “died peacefully in his sleep while at home” on Tuesday, according to his representative, as reported by The Post.
“George was a devoted family man, a cherished friend, and a confidant to all who were fortunate enough to have encountered him,” a family spokesperson stated in a statement.
“He will be sorely missed eternally.” The representative continued, “The family has requested privacy during this time.”
The cause of mortality has not been disclosed.

From 1982 to 1993, Wendt was the lead actor in all 11 seasons of “Cheers.”
According to Chicago magazine in 2021, he recalled auditioning for the NBC comedy show, stating that he “needed to look like a guy who wanted to have another beer.”
Wendt’s character was most renowned for his catchphrase, “Afternoon, everyone.”

The “Fletch” actor collaborated with the late Kirstie Alley, Ted Danson, John Ratzenberger, Woody Harrelson, Kelsey Grammer, and Rhea Perlman.

Six Emmy nominations for best supporting actor in a comedy series were bestowed upon Wendt for his iconic performance in “Cheers.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Wendt, who was born in Illinois, began his career in acting after being expelled from Notre Dame in his junior year due to a 0.0 GPA.

The actor informed the Kansas City Star in 2016 that he had essentially resigned and had not informed the university.
“I had relocated off campus during my junior year and failed to consider the consequences.” I did not possess a vehicle. The temperature was frigid. I did not attend any classes.

In 1971, he obtained a degree in economics from Rockhurst College, and subsequently transitioned to a career as a comedic actor in the mid-1970s.
Additionally, he was recognized for his roles in the 1985 film “House” and the 1992 film “Forever Young.”
Wendt is survived by his wife, Bernadette Birkett, whom he married in 1978, as well as his children, Hilary, Joe, and Daniel, as well as his stepchildren, Joshua and Andrew.
The late actor is also the uncle of Jason Sudeikis, the protagonist of “Ted Lasso,” who is the son of Wendt’s sister, Kathryn.
